Friends for Life Animal Rescue

Mission

Friends For Life Animal Rescue strives to find loving, forever homes for the animals in our care.

Animals in our program come from a number of sources - sometimes they have been abandoned or left behind by their families, sometimes they are surrendered by owners no longer able to care for them, and sometimes they are feral kittens that are caught young enough to socialize and adopt into forever homes instead of growing up wild and on the streets.

From intake into the program, animals are placed into foster homes where they receive love, medical care, food, shelter, and socialization - basic needs that are often unmet before coming to the program.

Volunteer Work

My wife and I have been fostering kittens with Friends for Life for over 10 years now. We both have always loved cats (we currently have three) and when we bought our home we decided to help animals in need. We have helped care for and socialize nearly 100 cats by now!

Providing a safe home, food, water, and a litter box is only a small part of fostering kittens. Our biggest contribution to these animals is socialization. Many of the kittens we receive are very afraid of people. It is our job to teach them to trust. We achieve this through bribery (kittens love chicken!), play, and snuggles. It is always so adorable to have a kitten that two weeks ago hid when you cleaned their litter box now hopping on the couch, purring, looking for pets.

Volunteer Work

I volunteed at Sarvey from August to Decemeber 2021. I had been at home working on my Computer Science degree for almost eight months. I was satisfied with my rapid progress on my degree but missed the sense of fulfilment I use to get by working with others, solving problems, and being able to contribute in a meaningful way. So, I decided to seek out somewhere to volunteer and my wife suggest I contact Sarvey.

I volunteered weekly at Sarvey for four hours. My duties included cleaning cages and enclosures for possums, owls, raccoons, gulls, rock pigeons, squirrels, turkey vultures, and bald eagles. Additionally, I helped prepare food for all these animals and the larger animals including bears, cougars, and deer.

I really enjoyed volunteering at Sarvey. It was wonderful to help these animals when they needed it the most. It was always a little sad coming in to see an animal I enjoyed had been released. But knowing I did something to help the animals heal and thrive gave me a great sense of accomplishment.
